Looking west, thinking east Coriolistic Anachronisms - A Vancouver Blog

Hi, I'm your friendly Coriolibot (as in "ro-bot").

The post below is a random entry that we hope you haven't read before. Regular current entries follow. Enjoy, and come back soon for brand new posts!

Vintage! This is a random post. The year was 2006...

There were a lot of very sad Brazilian students in the Vancouver streets today, after their team lost to France 0-1 in the FIFA World Cup. I’m not one to praise commercial sports too much, but still, as Numérobis would say, « Ça fait plaisir. » France advances to the semi-finals and will play against Portugal. They seem to have found a new rhythm and have definitely regained the full support of their fans. Good for them.

I totally enjoy the World Cup because it’s the one thing, with the Olympic Games, that the whole world watches and that hasn’t got anything to do with war or catastrophes. People are glued to their TVs all around the planet, no matter what time of the day, in bush villages, mountain pueblos, major cities and farms everywhere. Football is the one thing pretty much all races have in common, and as such it creates bonds and draws bridges.

I remember playing an improvised football game on an uneven and bare grazing field, on the Vanuatu island of Espiritu Santo, locals against crew members, barefoot, near a village that didn’t even have electricity. The locals spoke a few words of English, but those were not needed. The game is a language by itself.

Any way, allez les bleus! Enfin, les blancs.

We now go back to current chronological entries:
Oct 7

It had been raining for two dull days but suddenly, just a touch before sunset, the sky begins to move. It swirls and changes and breaks apart towards the west, presage to an interesting evening. A huge patch of blue sky eventually appears over the Straight of Georgia while closer to the city, cloud layers become more visible, tangled and seemingly disorganized, sharing space and currents. The wind is blowing hard from the sea and a few rotors form around Grouse, quickly dissipated and replaced. When the sun finally dips down into the blue from its hide, the world explodes into a short-lived kaleidoscope. Soon the break is over, however, and light fades back to temporary shades of grey. But a final surprise comes when, long after the sun has slipped under the cloud barrier of the Vancouver Island, its surviving rays manage to hit a high altitude layer right above us and turn it to bright pink. People stare and quiet down, mesmerized. The city lights are coming on one by one - and I don’t have my camera. It’s just another day at the office.
