North Cove Marina, Manhattan - 360 Panorama
October 6, 2010
Of course running around the southern tip of Manhattan isn't always as nice. There's a nasty section underneath the FDR highway and some street running is necessary to cross from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Hudson. But still, Battery Park more than makes up for the rest.  Here's a sunset on a none-running night. As always, click on the bottom-right Full Screen icon and then pan by clicking and dragging the mouse, zoom in and out with the mouse wheel...  To ...
The Blackout Template is Now Live!
October 5, 2010
I am still ironing out a few kinks but for testing and demonstration purposes, I've enabled the new Blackout skin in the Lesotho Trip category only. Please feel free to visit it and leave some comments or feedback. It's obviously a radical change and a return to the old darkness, but I feel that as much as the current pale skin works well for text-intensive entries, Blackout serves photography posts best. So I'll probably keep both skins side by side for a while,...
News: dark template on the way and a shot of Battery Park skyline
October 3, 2010
The new dark template is coming along nicely. I guess naming it was an easy task: it will be Blackout. It's a minimalist grainy design in very dark and moody shades that should suit photography very well. In the meantime, here's an urban view of my regular running route around Battery Park, at the North Cove Marina. Looks a lot like Vancouver's Coal Harbour, in a sense... I also shot a few full panoramas and hope to have at least one ready and good enough to be posted he...
TechCrunch Acquired by AOL
September 30, 2010
"On a final note, I don’t want to get all teary-eyed here, but the best comment I ever saw on TechCrunch was years ago in response to when I quipped something like 'This is my blog and I’ll write what I want' in response to a troll. The response was 'No Mike, This is OUR blog. You just work here.'" Written by TechCrunch founder Mike Arrington in a post where he discusses the recent acquisition of his famous techno-geeky blog network by online news giant A...
The 2010 State of Things: Visualizing Coriolistic Anachronisms
September 30, 2010
There are a few brilliant people out there who turn word patterns into insightful art. For instance, here's what my blog looks like nowadays as seen by Wordle. Their size is proportional to their importance, i.e. frequency. There's also Tagxedo that does it even more artistically, and seems to be using another algorithm, hence the different result. These are just fun! Templates are fully customizable; you can play with font, colors and shapes. You ...
African flowers
September 28, 2010
Following a trend started in the previous [[South African Flowers]] entry, here are more beautiful flowers from South Africa, labelled with the help of my own flower expert. Keep in mind these aren't necessarily endemic.
The 2010 Atlantic Antic in Music
September 27, 2010
Every year in September, Brooklyn's Atlantic Avenue turns into the tame monster of a street fair. Hundreds of kiosks, vendors, merchants, various opportunists and also music bands line both sides of the finally-turned-pedestrian street. Hundreds of thousands of people congregate to the event and clog the space, strolling lazily, sampling delicious food and sipping beer in designated spots. Marie and I had our ritual sardines and sausage and decided that...
The Whiteout template goes live!
September 26, 2010
I guess the change in mood is so radical that no introduction is necessary. I am still doing some minor tweaking behind the scenes, but basically there she is, Whiteout, her hair white as snow and pale blue eyes. Make sure that you reload the page should your browser be holding on to elements of the past dark skin, making the blog look weird. In case you just can't live with such lightness, I've included a right sidebar widget that will allow you to revert to the ol...
New Whiteout blog skin coming soon!
September 25, 2010
Those of you, if any, who think that the current dark theme is hard to read will soon be rewarded with a brand new look. It should be ready within a few days. The upcoming skin is called Whiteout and was designed to be as easy on the eyes as possible. It's something I had been meaning to do for a long time and it sumarizes my tastes in terms of very light themes. If you liked the dark skin, fear not. I will next roll out a redesigned dark and moody theme and wi...
New Aerial Photography Gallery
September 21, 2010
Here's a sneak peek at the soon-to-be-implemented Aerial Photography gallery. Hover your mouse for controls. It features images from all kinds of previous galleries where they didn't really belong and will hopefully grow into a much larger collection. For that I will have to start flying again soon, before my wings have shrunk to mere memories... SlideShowPro({ attributes: { id: "album-41", width: 550, height: 350 }, mobile: { auto: false },...
