The Macro Experiment - Part 2
September 28, 2008

For Marie, who constantly reminds me how beautiful flowers can be. This morning at 5:25 AM, I got up and prepared for a trip. I wasn't going far and yet, I would explore a new universe. The objective was Stanley Park, my spaceship was a camera and for propulsion, I'd be tapping into macro theory. It was my first outing ever with Abetoo as a macro photography tool. We were both quite excited. Abetoo is my Canon 450D, in case you're wondering if I've lost it. Granted, my current macro line of accessories consists of a...

Well kids, we'll start today's class with a trivia: can anyone tell me what this photo is? The Frenchies among you are at an advantage, but you won't know that until later... Can't guess? Just read on then... A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon some pretty amazing macro photography and my curiosity was triggered. I began reading more on the subject, trying to assess whether or not decent macro could be achieved with a minimal budget. Unidentified clown-ish beetle The best thing about macro photography is that it makes me slow down, clear my mind and tune into a world of the tiniest proportions. The insects I discover then are colorful, in turn mighty or funny looking, and they often are tigers within their realm. Dragonfly, I know this much There will unfortunately be...

Two Worlds

High and low, near and far, micro and macro, slow and fast, grounded and aloft, threatened and free, orange and green, these opposites illustrate the complex tangle of our present lives. The Cape dwarf chameleon was stunningly photographed by Marie this morning in the luxuriant Constantia garden. I extracted the paraglider frame from an airborne video I shot late last year. Suddenly I realize why, out of all the color combinations available for the Iota 2 canopy model, I chose this one! Two worlds - Chameleon photo by...

Ballpoint Pen Up Close
February 16, 2018

While procrastinating about the last installment of the Road to Mokala series, I began wondering if my inkwell had dried. One thing lead to another and I ended up examining the situation through a makeshift macro lens. Here is the result. Disclaimer, I did not clean the pen before this shoot, I just picked it up from my desk. Guess I need to clean the desk more often. This is done with an old Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens reverse-mounted on bellows and extension tubes. The lens is pre-locked at its maximum aperture and focus...
