Speechless

reply Well mate, there are people far away, tens of thousands of kms away, who are utterly speechless as well. To use a local term, I am 'gob-smacked'. I thought people were kidding me. The waves of unease and dismay have travelled a long way, a stunned silence descend on my work mates when we heard the news. A friend shook and her head and said to me, "How could the Americans be so utterly stupid?" I have never visited the USA, but I have faith that many there are wonderful and smart and you will somehow get through this dark period. Many times I have commented to my family that you guys had an utterly magic leader in Obama. You found him and elected him and that can happen again with someone even more brilliant. He was an inspiration to all. Hang in there. May the long road to your last President's real successor be fruitful.

reply Vince, A majority of Americans voted for hope. Just spread too thin across the nation. So I am Speechless in Arizona, hoping that some of our elected Congresspeople come to their senses sooner than later.

reply This is a tragedy caused not just by ignorance, but also by fear and anger...all three plumbed and contorted by a person with all the markings of a cult leader. Calling him a "clown" is generous, given the malignant tone and content of his rantings. Throughout the campaign, I have been sorely tempted to claim my right to Canadian citizenship (through my father), but that would accomplish little: no one, anywhere, is likely to escape what is to come. What we can do is stay here and continue to fight for what we believe our democracy has stood, and should stand, for (including helping those who will suffer most under the coming regime). I hope that, after a period of shock and mourning, I will find it within myself to be part of those who will lift each other up and do that. Thank you for writing this post and for referring everyone to Mr. Remnick's post. We need each other now more than ever.
