On the Menu, a South African Spring Rolled in Flowers
September 1, 2015
After a hectic move from dreaded Harlem to our old beloved Brooklyn 'hood, from the depths of the most stressful professional year of my life, and out of Africa, shall soon spring a few blooming pictures and if luck holds, a story or more. Three days from now, I will accomplish the ritual passage from here to there, from rush to lush, north to south, ugly to pristine, equal pollution to unfair beauty. I will be Cape Town-bound, not to say spell-, joining Marie in our ye...
A Little Computer Engineering Magic
August 22, 2015
I was recently reading an article about emerging processors, those mini-brains at the heart (yes I intended the anatomically incorrect metaphor) of all computers including the device you are reading this on. My jaw was left hanging low by the following sentence: This technology opens the door to continuing the development of Moore’s Law all the way down to the quantum limit — the point at which the quantum uncertainty around the position of an electron is larger than the ...
The Flying Years - Part II
August 2, 2015
It is unlikely that I have ever dedicated a post to anybody other than Marie and a big black cat—except a manuscript, of course, which was dedicated to the late Gilbert Trigano, heart and soul of Club Med and indirectly responsible for sending me spinning through the wildest years of my adult life—but this post is dedicated to my long-lost friends who still fly commercially, keeping the dream alive. Yes, you. Well, the first part of this story was already...
Good Bye Terrace
July 28, 2015
We are at T-minus a bunch of sleepless nights and steamy days, Brooklyn-bound at last, stubborn as beagles homing in on the cheese. Here in Harlem, nights are mild going on tropical and while fireflies for some reason have deserted us, the terrace is lush and welcoming. Marie will once again leave a bit of herself behind, gardens being easier created than torn. But therein lies the beauty of it: a blank slate soon will come alive and magic will flow. Stay tuned. A new chap...
Too Close for Comfort
Today I was running back home from work and did not have much time to stop, with for only pixel-gatherer, my Samsung phone. Coming up on the Air, Sea and Space museum hosted on the Hudson River aboard the USS Intrepid retired aircraft carrier, I could see the upper decks of the Carnival Splendor towering far above the carrier, a couple of piers to the north. As I ran closer, I heard her horn sound three short blasts, signal for coming astern. It was 5 PM, the enormous ship...
The Life of a Cat
Blog reader: "Tell me how he died..." Vince: "I will tell you how he lived." Adapted, with a smirk, from The Last Samuraï When I came to New York City eight years ago, inbound from beautiful Vancouver and landing at Newark's International Airport for a coffee - yes, I had flown across North America to come have coffee with a stranger in Jersey - I did not really know for sure that my life was about to change radically. It was just a hurricane-strength gut feelin...

Those of you with a certain nationality are automatically disqualified. The rest can play and guess what and where this structure is... Toy world I once more apologize for the relative silence around here. It reflects much noise off-camera and unrest to say the least. But smoother days will be back. Coming soon, The Flying Years - Part II, a follow-up to Part I written in 2008.
Inwood and Spuyten Duyvil Creek - 360 Degree Panorama
June 3, 2015
// A the very northern tip of our Manhattan Island sits Inwood Hill Park. A face-lifted and heavily reshaped Spuyten Duyvil Creek separates the island from continental Bronx. Across the narrow river arm, a giant "C" (For Columbia University, which is nowhere in sight but has sports fields on the insular side - and proper propaganda rock space is rare in NYC so one grabs it where one can find it) rests on a cliff, drawing all eyes. North end of Manhattan As always...
New York City Sleeps
May 25, 2015
This is an eerie sight for a Monday morning. The party must have been harsh last night. Here is the view down 6th Avenue towards the south, Macy's right behind me Not Shot With My iPhone 6 (but with my Samsung)
Deer Friends...
May 17, 2015
These are slack times when it comes to blogging and photography. I am New York-saturated. Better days will come. For now, a single image of deer in Cold Spring a couple of weekends ago - there were seven or eight of them, a bit skittish but a nice sight so close to civilization. Skittish
Roosevelt Island - 360 Degree Panorama
May 6, 2015
// Following the stills I posted this week of my last Roosevelt Island outing, here is a full spherical panorama shot near the new park. This was shot in HDR, or rather Exposure Fusion which is my new go-to HDR-like technique but does not involve tone mapping, because I needed the latitude of bracketed exposure to compensate for wide extremes between the glowing white of the stones and a relatively dark skyline and river. So the sky looks a little surreal, apologies for...
