Mighty Wings
July 5, 2022

The Maine eagle gathering in the first pictures below is a seasonal occurrence. The birds of prey gather to feast on alewives in a small tidal estuary where the fish are corralled into narrow and extremally shallow water on their way upstream to breed and possibly die. This was the most eagles I have seen at one time, closely rivaled, however, by some sightings in Whitehorse, BC, circa 2007. Another post will come to sum up this trip to Maine last May. In New York City, we mostly find our bald eagles on Staten Island...

Of Time and Elasticity
June 29, 2022

Whether it is through extremely long exposures or the blink of a fast shutter, I always know that coming home and firing up the virtual lightbox to develop my shots, I will be treated to portraits of a parallel universe; a world I might have inhabited at the time of shooting but which flowed in many alternative directions and to the beat of countless additional tempos I just did not have the bandwidth for. Take the following snapshots for instance. Moments frozen in time, many layers seemingly compacted into a narrow...

Seals!
May 9, 2020

Spotted a few weeks BC*, these two seals sat on a rock in weak afternoon light, dutifully soaking in the invisible waves of a pale sun, a stone's throw from the beach.  Perched Of all places in and around the city, Staten Island has over the years yielded the steadiest stream of cool fauna, bald eagles, ospreys, snakes, deer, groundhogs, salamanders, musk rats and now these adorable fury fluffs.  Adding to this list the dolphins and snowy owls of other beaches, New York City does manage to impress me. •...

Against All Odds
January 13, 2020

Yes, eight and a half million souls merrily sharing three hundred square miles of prime real-estate is a lot. Way too much in fact, as is the case for any large city. The very notion that I spent seven idyllic years on a Caribbean island almost exactly the size and shape of Manhattan where I personally knew most of the hundred and fifty inhabitants (including a few fish) still boggles my mind. However with some five hundred and seventy-eight miles of shoreline, New York City is blessed with an exceptional aquatic...

The Eagles Are Coming!
July 21, 2017

Out on Staten Island recently, we spotted a pair of juvenile bald eagles, not quite bold yet and their heads still dark, later joined by a parent. Mt Loretto, as often said here, is special. It is probably the only park in the five boroughs that is not packed on a summer weekend. Almost alone, we had our picnic on a favorite bench facing the ocean and watched large ships cruising by a stone's throw away. Happy birds were everywhere, a groundhog scuttled as if we had been Balrogs. In its nth iteration, that outing remains...
