Airlines: Our Slaves Will Ensure Your Comfort And Safety
Remember the last time you were passing through an airport on a trip from A to B and ran into some issue that required the assistance of an airline employee? Or maybe there was no issue: you just went to the counter, checked your bags in, then headed to the gate and boarded. Think about all those friendly or not-so-friendly airline people you dealt with. Remember how you probably thought of them as these highly-trained, all-things-air-travel-proficient professionals? Ca...
Placebo Merchants
October 26, 2010
Everyone's heard the word, right? Not the band, the medical term. Something like this: placebos are used in clinical trials. Someone puts out an ad for easy money, a study of this and that. A bunch of loosers willing subjects show up. They are given pills for some condition. Half of them are fooled into thinking they're taking medicine when in fact, what they're swallowing is placebo, an empty decoy. Measurements are then taken and results compared, drug vs place...
Blog Now Loading Properly in Internet Explorer
October 25, 2010
It was just brought to my attention that the blog was no longer loading in Internet Explorer. My fault. I'd broken it. It should now be fixed, minus some cosmetic issues I'm still working on. I had done some tweaking on the top search bar and neglected to proof my work in IE. I hate that browser. Granted, my coding might be weak, but it still works in all other browsers... If you are still using IE despite my repeated attempts at convincing you to switch to another brows...
Insignificant Brooklyn Street Stories
October 24, 2010
It was just another night. Autumn air had gotten chilly and I was happily wearing a jacket zipped up to my chin. I slowly walked around the neighborhood, G10 in hand, looking for the stories the night was willing to tell me. Some stories are big, loud and juicy, others quite shy and easy to miss. But since our lives are mostly made of the latter, the former only breaking through once in a while like bright beacons in vast dullness, I sometimes try to focus o...
USS New York, the Razor's Edge
October 22, 2010
This is a long overdue post. It goes back to last fall when I finally went to visit the Sea, Air and Space Museum in Manhattan. Hosted aboard the permanently retired aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, the museum features many Navy aircraft parked on its upper deck and in hangars, in addition to allowing access to various sections of the ship like the bridge and crew mess. It also displays an old US Navy submarine and G-BOAD, the British Airways Concorde that set a world record...
Top Menu Upgraded
October 20, 2010
Here we go, full functionality has been restored to the top menu, with a new jQuery script called easyAccordion. As a bonus, the page should be loading a touch faster. Hallelujah.
Top Menu Inoperative
October 20, 2010
The top menu in the black tab is currently inoperative, my apologies. I am in the process of updating the old accordion script that powered it and had become an issue. This should all be back to normal soon. Thanks for your patience!
Excursion to Pelham Bay Park - The Bronx
October 19, 2010
Granted, the Bronx, northernmost New York City borough, doesn't enjoy much of a reputation. It happens to be one of the most densely populated areas in the US, and one of the poorest. This all goes back to the dark ages of the 70's and 80's when crime was at its apogee, but the stigma persists. Lesser known to most, a quarter of the Bronx is occupied by park land, some 7,000 acres of it. There's a lot of water, too. Water plays a quintessential role in NYC where 3 major...
Madrugando en Brooklyn
October 16, 2010
That's New York, Too
October 16, 2010
With the traffic and the noise and the crowd and the smells and transit and subway platforms and rush hour and stress and steel and glass and concrete and potholes and manholes and red lights and stop signs and taxis and schedules and unions and bad news and politics and budgets and law enforcement and parking tickets and garbage and rats and dog shit and Wall Street and Ground Zero and David Letterman and super-achievers and opportunity and BCBG and organic...
Amazing New York skies, some night
October 13, 2010
The good thing about living right under the rooftops with a skylight view into the atmosphere is that we get ample opportunities to catch stunning, fleeting moments like this one. All we have to do is climb up through the trapdoor and setup camp on the roof. From up there, the eye travels across the New York Harbor, over Lady Liberty and into New Jersey. The 3 major airports surrounding the city are orchestrating a never-ending ballet of aircrafts and it is rare that we...
