Zipcar? Zero.
I recently looked up Zipcar as a solution for the all-too-common New Yorker lack of wheels. I had seen the cars on Vancouver streets and heard good things about them. The rates for our New York area were on a par with most other major Zipcar hubs: around $70 daily for week days and $80 daily for week-ends, all other company advantages included. Two days ago, Marie and I decided to sign up. Before talking the plunge and paying my yearly membership and a sign-up fee, I lo...
Nebula
June 12, 2011
Unknown to his near-sighted mind, isolated on a low daily orbit, a careless DUMBO painter is leaving nebulae on the sidewalks. If only he or she could look up through a telescope and realize that nature always imitates itself. Sidewalk nebula, DUMBO, Brooklyn
Manhattan, Island of Steel
June 10, 2011
As temperatures soar in a premature summer blast, evening remains a soothing balm on the day's chafing. These views of steely Manhattan were taken from the Brooklyn Bridge Park. Most prominent in the spiky skyline is the recently completed New York by Gehry residential tower and its convoluted design. The 8 Spruce Street building's units are said to be exclusively for rent, a new trend in the high-end real estate world. With more and more people hesitating to buy, it se...

I've implemented (through Cloudflare, but it can be done the good old way) a nifty experimental feature on this blog that allows you to highlight any word or expression in a post and by clicking on the little bubble that appears, get all kinds of useful information about it, starting with the Wikipedia definition if one exists - all in a neat popup window without leaving the blog! In addition, my normal in-posts links to Wikipedia, Google Maps and many more will now fea...
Coriolistic Anachronisms Now Mobile-Friendly!
June 5, 2011
It took me a while to get to it, but with the help of WordPress' awesome potential for customization, I've finally implemented a mobile-aware theme that should streamline and simplify your visit if you are visiting this blog on a phone. Sadly, not owning a web-enabled phone myself, I am left to do my testing on an emulator - but as far as I can tell, it's working well. The WPTouch plugin I am using claims to be compatible with all common mobile devices, iPhone, Blackber...

Prospect Park Litter Mob Timewarp
May 31, 2011
I don't know about you but I am hot. Suddenly, I miss the trade winds' cooling effect and I long for a salty wave to splash me or - let's think local - for a bright autumn leaf to caress my cheek on its slow fall from a sighing tree to stunning, ephemeral parterres. So as New York prepares for a seasonal sizzle, air conditioners cranking up everywhere and releasing even more heat, the city's innumerable engines roaring and spitting out evil gases in a humid air mass tha...

Host Transfer Complete!
May 30, 2011
That's it, the blog has moved to its new home. So far, I see no issues with WordPress. The main web site and its SlideShowPro-powered photo galleries are still struggling, however, because I'm not done updating the image caches - but that's ongoing. It's only a matter of uploading another... 16,000 files. Hick. I know, I know, it shows horribly poor maintenance skills on my part. Not all these files are needed. I'll setup a cron job asap. Point taken.
Web Hosting: Stepping Back, Forward
May 28, 2011
In early 2005, my first hosting provider was a little company out of New Orleans. A one man show, it offered me a friendly deal the first year and I took the bate. By the second year, Katrina had devastated Louisiana and, hungry, my host inflated the rates. While sympathizing with disaster victims, I was also infuriated by poor business ethics, and, not being so rich myself, I bailed. In urgent need of cheap web hosting, I did what most beginners do, I Goggled (not sure...
Web Site DNS Crisis!
May 27, 2011
To those of you who might have attempted to visit the blog in the last three or four hours, I apologize. At best, you will have received a "Web Page Unavailable" notice, at worse you will have ended up visiting some Southern Christian site that sure had nothing to do with me! Something happened, I still don't know if it was a security breach, a technical glitch or the beginning of the end of the world, but my IP got switched from dedicated to shared, my DNS got messed u...
